Here I am again with a little tale to tell. Yesterday, I came to view a movie with my girlfriend that struck all the right chords with me. With just the opening scene, I was immediately reminded of class. As it went on, the thoughts and ideas as well as the message of the movie only further reminded me of class. This is by no means one of my eight entries, but I found this movie to be too interesting to not talk about it even just a little bit. Can anyone guess what the movie is? Well, I shall spare you the need to with one glance at the picture below.
That's right! I watched A Clockwork Orange! In all honesty, I was watching an online web show with a character that was a shout out to the titular character of Alex DeLarge. At first, I assumed I would just be watching another crazy English movie, but what I did not expect was that I would see pieces and ideas that reminded me of class. As I followed Alex around on his grand adventure of violence and rape that eventually leads to his ultimate misfortune, I saw and noticed things that couldn't help but put a smile on my face as I thought about some of the pieces we saw in class and lessons I took from Professor O'Brien.
Here we have the Droogs having a lovely time enjoying some milk at a milk bar. For some reason, everything about the artistic design of this bar screamed contemporary or at the very least, modern to me. It was different, it was unique, and most importantly, it was shocking. I can honestly say that I have never been to a place with such odd lighting, outrageous tables, or absurd milk dispensers as shown in the movie. Just the very zoom out of the camera during this scene to show the entirety of the bar was a form of art in itself.
While above shows another example of the modern and slow move towards contemporary, I would actually like to address something else in the movie. It was hard to find a good quality picture of the scene, but as Alex is corrected to be a proper member of society, it depicts a gruesome testing method done by the government. It was quite over the top and sometimes a bit hard to view. One thing it definitely showed was that how the government should not be trusted. The government and authority in general were portrayed in a very bad light in this movie. It's safe to say it was a definitely a shout out similar to how modern and contemporary artists want to break down the old traditions.
